Monday, July 22-- Gotcha Day!

Go ahead and scroll down and look at the pictures :)

Gotcha Day!!!

For those of you who do not know what Gotcha Day is that is the day adoption parents receive their child/get their child. That is why they call it Gotcha Day! We started off with breakfast which is better than Beijing's hotel. At 9:30 am, we had a meeting to kinda prepare us for our gotcha day. Then, we were to meet back in the lobby at 1:45 pm to leave to the Civil Affairs to get our children!! It was still so surreal. I wasn't really that nervous and of course, Dustin was as cool as a cucumber.

Skip ahead to a few hours.....
There are six families in our group getting their children in Guangzhou. All but two families have already adopted, so they knew what to expect. Of course we were one of the two families. The other family not only was it their first adoption but also it was their first child. I was okay on the bus ride. Not nervous, just excited. It only took us 15 minutes to get there.

We are here........
As we were downstairs in the lobby waiting for our elevator to go up, Dustin said "I just saw Sophie come in with her nannies." I was like are you sure it is her. He looked at me and said "Its not like I havent been staring at her picture 20 times a day since February." Then, it finally hit, I was getting a little nervous. I tried to look but someone got in front of her. Then, one of our guides told the nannies to wait cause the families havent gone upstairs yet. Dustin said she was wearing a hot pink dress. We got up to the Civil Affairs Office and picked our seat to wait. Then, about 5 minutes later they started calling out names. We weren't first. The first little girl came out and went straight to her mom, that was promising for us. Then, the second name was called, not us. Then, the third, not us. 4th- not us. 5th - not us. Well, I guess we are last. This whole time we were watching these families get their daughters. They all did well, except for the family who it was their first everything, their baby screamed her head off. I hope they think they werent doing anything wrong. Then, they didnt call our name. They just saw us eagerly waiting and motioned us over. I handed my camera off for some video and pictures and there she was in her hot pink dress that Dustin saw. They handed her over to Dustin. No crying. She was taking it all in. I did good, I didnt cry. I was worried if I did it may freak her out. but, I was calm yet excited. Dustin asked if I wanted to hold her- duh. We tried to give her a baby doll, she wasnt interested. We sat back down on the couch and gave her a bowl of Cheerios and she didnt do anything at first. So, I feed her a few and then, she started to go to town. She never cried. Dustin tried to get hold her again and she shook her head no. She is really smart. We had to get our passports out to do the paperwork and she pointed to my picture and said momma then looked at me. She did the same with Dustin. She has mosquito bites all over her legs, because the orphanage leaves the doors open at night. She has a cold or a respiratory infection, you can hear the rattle in her chest and she is all congested - poor thing. However, they did give us some medicine. There was a little boy there getting his sister and he came over and started hitting himself in the head and Sophie just busted out laughing. That was the first time we ever saw her smile or even her teeth. In all the pictures they gave us, she never smiled or showed her teeth. I was kinda worried there for a while that she may not have any teeth-LOL. So, the paperwork was done and it was time to get back on the bus back to the hotel.

A very big thank you to everyone who prayed for our Gotcha Day, Sophie did great. She never cried, well up to that point- we will get to that in a minute.

4pm- Back at the hotel. The agency wants you to spend the rest of the day in your room bonding with your child. They even don't want you eating outside of your hotel. So we get in the elevator to go to our room and she is still doing fine, just looking at everything. We go in the room, she is still doing good. She doesn't want me to put her down or for Dustin to hold her. So, I sit in the floor with her and start pulling out some toys. She is still not interested in the doll (I thought she liked dolls according to the update). then I pulled out a pink Minnie Mouse backpack that she loved (good job Mawmaw). She started unzipping all the zippers taking the toys I had in there out and putting them back in there. She did this pretty much the whole night. She loved the toy camera we got her, she even knows to put it up to her face and click the button to take a picture. She does know some English, they said her foster parents prepared her well. She can say mama, daddy, bye bye, hey, and no. And she will repeat anything you say. She point to herself and say "Weina." She loves looking at herself on the computer or my camera. She loves the panda that David Ryan made her at Build a Bear. It even has his voice saying " I love you, Sophie." She loves pushing the button and laughing. She has the most beautiful smile, her whole face lights up. We first got her to smile when we pulled out the stacking cups (which I recommend bringing if you are adopting) and Dustin knocked them down and she just started laughing. She was now allowing Dustin to play and sit close. Then, it was about time to eat so Dustin went across the street to get Sophie her first McDonald's. And Sophie and me just stayed in the room and played. She allows you to kiss her, but doesnt kiss back yet. Dustin wasn't gone very long. We gave her her first taste of a french fry and she loved it. She wanted more. She likes Big Macs, too. Dustin gave her some of his and she took the top bun off mine and ate it. She loves chicken nuggets. She can eat. She is just like her brother, she likes to cram all of it in her mouth. She likes to share. She will take a bite of a french fry or bread and then give it to you. She loves drinking from her sippy cup. She likes to pretend she is pouring from her sippy cup into one of the stacking cups and giving it to you. And of course, you pretend to drink it.

Eventually, she started warming up to Dustin. It took her accidentally hitting Dustin with one of the stacking cups and him acting like it hurt and it was game on. She started throwing everything at him and laughing so hard. So, David Ryan has another wrestling buddy. She is a little rough thing, you can tell she was around boys. She likes to mock everything you do, how you wipe your hands, putting sunglasses on, the way we lay in the floor, she was even pretending to dip her nuggets like her daddy. She seemed like she transitioned well. Thanks again for the prayers.

However, she did have a little crying spell. Our guide came by our hotel room to drop off her medicine. After she left, she started crying. I don't know if she was crying cause she thought she was taking her back or if she wanted to go with her.. but the crying only lasted about a minute. Then, she wanted to play and hit Dustin again. All fun and games again.

I havent gotten her to use the potty. She has a diaper on, but they say she is potty trained and let you know when she has to go, however she peed a lot in her diaper. She did fine with me changing her. Except she doesnt like her shoes off. She wont let me take them off. She loves bows (Tobie and Liz). Her Minnie Mouse backpack has a Velcro bows that you can put on Minnie on the front of the backpack and she tried putting one in her hair. So, I pulled out a zip lock bag of bows for her and she had to put a pink one in her hair. She kept it in her hair for a good while. She loves taking the bows in and out of the bag. Same thing with the band aids. She doesn't like getting wet her clothes wet ( sound familiar, David Ryan?). I have to rub her dress and get it dry if some of her water leaks out her dress.

We skyped the grandparents. She laughed for them and they got to watch her play. She even waved at them and told them hey and then waved and told them bye. She loved looking at herself on the Skype. David Ryan was still asleep when we skyped my mom and when he did wake up, he was ill. but, I think I did see a smile. He will do better this afternoon when it is not so early in the morning over there.

So far, so good.....Well, until bedtime. Again, she didn't mind me changing her diaper or her into her pjs (I think she is in a 24mo or 2t). I took her shoes off but she put them right back on herself, LOL, the girl loves her shoes. She even let Dustin pick her up, but when Dustin laid her in her crib, she started crying bloody murder. She cried like this for 10 minutes and I said lets try her in our bed (shoes still on). She still continued to cry, this went on for about 35 minutes. She didnt want Dustin putting the covers over her and us talking to her. So, I finally just picked, put her over my shoulder, and started rocking her and patting her back while in bed. After seven minutes of this, she was out. I sat up with her for awhile still rocking her to make sure she was in deep sleep. Then, she started snoring. Poor thing, you could feel the rattling in her chest. So, Dustin arched a pillow and I laid her down. Now both her and Dustin are snoring away.

I knew bedtime was going to be tough from reading other adoption blogs, but my mother instincts jumped in. Lets just hope she sleeps through the night. She is so precious though. She has some of the same mannerisms of David Ryan, God knew what he was doing when he matched us with Sophie. However, there is one thing that isnt like her brother, she takes her medicine well. She didn't fight, I just held up to her mouth and she drank it. We can't believe that our dreams and prayers came true today, it was just so surreal. We already love her so much and I hope she starts to love us soon. It is just hard to describe this feeling until you have gone through it and some of you adoption parents probably know what I am taking about. She is just the cutest and that laugh melts your heart. I can't wait for her to meet her brother and for them to play and laugh together.

Well, I am going  to go to bed now while I can. Sorry if there are any grammar errors, it has been an overwhelming day. Good night.

Sunday, July 21 - fly to Guangzhou day!

We are one step closer to Sophie. Today we flew to Guangzhou, this is where Sophie is from.

But first.....We woke up and ate breakfast, which is awesome. Then, we went back to our hotel room to skype with our family. David Ryan was happy to see and hear from us. My sister went out of town and left her six week old puppy at my mom's to puppy sit. And the first thing David Ryan said to us was " I got me a dog." He thought my sister dropped off the puppy for him. We will let my sister explain that one to him when she comes to pick the puppy back up. He did ask us to come get him again. That is the hardest part of all of this. I do miss him so much.

We met our guide Nancy in the hotel lobby at 8:30 am for she could take us to the airport. There is one other family that is going to the same province as us. The other families are either going to different provinces or have already flown directly to Guangzhou. We got to the airport and checked in. We did the security check. Our flight was at 11:30 am, we started boarding at 11. We had to actually take a bus shuttle to our plane. The flight was only 3 hours but they fed us. I guess that is what is different from Chinese airlines and US airlines. The flight had a little more turbulence, but it went fast. I read half my book on this flight. Our flight landed at 2:40 pm. Gettting our luggage was check. This airport was not nearly as crowded as Beijing's airport, so we easily found our guide, William.

We are staying at the China Hotel/Marriott and it is so beautiful. This is probably the only time we will get to stay at a 5 Star Hotel. The whole first floor is like a mall with stores like Gucci. We got settled in our hotel since we will be here for two weeks, our temporary home. Then, we walked around and in the hotel. We had supper at a McDonalds that is conveniently next door, we had to take a break from noodles and rice. After that, we went to a 7eleven for some bottled water. Then, back to the hotel. Dustin took a bath. Let me tell you about the bathtub, the bathroom has speakers for you can listen to the tv (which is in English) and has a window with closing/opening blinds so you can watch tv from the bathtub. Our view from the window is awesome. Dustin fell asleep while I ended the night blogging and facebooking.

Tomorrow is the day we get Sophie. I wonder how she is going to respond. I wonder what my emotions will be like. Pray for a nice smooth transition. We will be getting at 2pm our time and  1 am our time.

Saturday, July 20- Sightseeing in Beijing Day!

Saturday, July 20 - Sightseeing Day!

The day started with us going to the free breakfast here at the hotel. By the way, this hotel is beautiful. The breakfast was awesome, Dustin really enjoyed it. It had both American and Chinese food. Again, Dustin was more adventurous. I had the American breakfast; waffles, bacon, fruit, etc. Dustin ate congee, fried vegetables, fried sweet potato, Chinese bacon and Chinese sausage. I did try the congee since that is what the orphanage feeds the children, to me it had no taste, but Dustin said it wasn’t that bad.

After breakfast, we skyped home to David Ryan. He was a little sad this time, he even started crying but not cause he missed us. He had a boo boo on his foot and wanted me to give him a band aid. We talked to them a little this time since we were well rested. Then, Dustin skyped his parents who also invited his grandpa to join the conversation and that was interesting for his grandpa to see that kind of technology.

Then, we meet our travel group and our travel guide “Nancy” (who was awesome) for a day of sightseeing. It was exciting meeting people from all over the US from our travel group. One family I met through Facebook so it was interesting meeting her and her husband in person. They are from Idaho and are adopting a two year old boy. We took a bus to Tiananmen Sqaure and it was crazy crowded. Remember it is National Holiday so everyone in China comes here for their vacation. Our guide said it isn’t normally that crazy. Disney World has nothing on this place. We took plenty of pictures. We also toured the Forbidden City, which was really neat. We had our travel group picture taken here. Dustin really enjoyed the tour since he is a big history buff. I had a little Chinese girl about 8 years old that wanted her mom to take my picture with her, then the mom had Dustin to use her camera take a picture with her and me. I guess they wanted a picture the skinny American. I am going to let Dustin tell you more about the Forbidden City.

Here is Dustin:

Hello everyone! I'm going to explain our trip to Tiananamen Square and Forbidden City.  As a history teacher I was MUCH more excited than Emily.  The bus ride was fairly short but as we pulled up the first thing we realized was all the people.  Tiananamen Square once held over 1 million Chinese citizens and today was a great visual of how that may have looked.  Our guide held a little blue flag attached to a 3 ft. rod for everyone to keep an eye on to not get lost during the tour.  Luckily no one was lost during the tour.  As we walked around the square our guide pointed out Chairman Mao's tomb.  Chinese citizens were lined up to see his body.  Our guide said Chinese citizens would stand in line for over 2 hours to have 5 min visit with Mao's body.  Not sure many Americans would be so eager and patient to see George Washington's body, but an interesting bit of info to say the least.  The square was HUGE.  We took a group picture in front of the Forbidden City and then proceeded to the front gate to enter.  Our guide shared many stories about the Forbidden City that I can share with you, but I'll just share one of the most interesting ones.  There are thresholds throughout the city made out of a huge piece of wood (about the size of a rail road cross tie).  There is a Chinese tradition NOT  to step on but OVER the threshold. Chinese believe the threshold is the shoulder of the city/family/emperor, so stepping on it would be like bringing down the city/family/emperor.  Chinese are very superstitious.  Women step over with right foot first and men always with left.

Ever been to see the pandas at the Memphis Zoo?  Remember the entrance of Asia?  It is designed after the Forbidden City.  The two lions at the entrance have meaning as well.  You will always see two lions at the entrance to important buildings.  One with a foot on a ball and another with a foot on a small lion.  One is female and other male.  The male is always on the left (as you exit the building) and the female is always on the right.  Why? Because women are always right.  Emily got a kick out of that little fact.  The Forbidden City is made up of over 110 acres of land.  It seemed to never end and was beautiful with detail throughout the attraction. Even the ground was made with individual bricks.  The city was completed in 1412 and is still in wonderful shape today.  If you want more stories of this part of our trip just ask me when I'm home.  I could talk forever about this, but I realize not everyone enjoys history as much as I do.

SNACK STREET (very interesting experience)

One of my goals was to be a little adventurous while here in China.  I told myself I would at least try to eat a scorpion.  This changed a little when even our tour guide recommended no one to eat anything from snack street.  So what is snack street you may ask?  It is about a three block stretch of street vendors that sell everything from dumplings and noodles to octopus, starfish, scorpions, bugs, etc.  (let the mind go wild here and you'll not be exaggerating, trust me).
Even with my guide giving that information I still tried to tell myself I was going to try a scorpion.  This all changed when we turned the corner to snack street.  The smell of the "rotten" tofu was the worst smell and most horrendous smell Emily and I both have EVER smelled before.  Just the smell itself made Emily queezy to her stomach.  There were people lined up and eating everything they had to offer.  There was NOTHING on the menu ANY American would find appetizing.  We walked all the way to the end of the street and back and was ready to return to the hotel.  Emily was so queezy we didn't wait for the rest of our group to finish their walk.  We had to get away from the awful smell.  Definitely a unique experience.

Here's Emily again. Also, today we received an update on Sophie. She loves rice, steam vegetables, meat, bananas, and pears. She doesn't like apples. She loves to play with dolls and blocks. She isn't fond of strangers. She is quiet and shy. She is potty trained. She weighs 22 lbs. She was with a foster family, but they returned her to the orphanage on June 25, 2013 to prepare for the adoption.

So, she has been through a lot changes already. Pray for her as she goes through yet another change as she is thrown to complete strangers on Monday. We also got two new pictures (most recent).

Tomorrow we leave for Guangzhou, which is where Sophie is from. We are getting closer to getting our daughter!

Thursday, July 18- Friday, July 19 - -Travel Days!

Our day started at 4am, our flight from Memphis to Chicago left at 6:56am. It was the smallest plane I have ever been on, it only had three rows of seats. I was a little uneasy about this, because you know I hate flying. However, the flight only lasted an hour and 25 minutes and it was okay, not too bad turbulence. We arrived in Chicago about 8:30, their airport is very nice and huge. I was hungry so I got some breakfast at McDonalds and Dustin ate a famous Chicago dog. Our flight from Chicago to Beijing was agonizing: 13 and a half hours! That was the longest flight ever. We were about ready to get off the plane after 6 hours. However, the plane ride was smooth. The food wasn’t that great. We did get lucky and get the exit roll so we had plenty of leg room and was by the bathrooms. I watched 4 movies while was on the plane, 3 of which were new releases so I was able to catch up on some movies. Dustin did some reading and watched 3 movies and 2 documentaries. And in between movies I slept and Dustin tried  to sleep. We landed about 2:40 pm (Friday) in Beijing, 1:40am your time. Baggage claim took forever, customs was quick, but when we got to the Open to the Public area (lobby) it was crazy madness. We then knew we were in China with massive groups of people. We later found out it was National Holiday (vacation) and the kids are out of school. So, like I said it was crazy madness.

We were finally able to find our guide and it took us an hour and 20 minutes to get to our hotel (our hotel is only 20 min away from the airport), that is how crazy the traffic was. Our guide “Sabrina” (the Chinese tour guides pick American names to go by) talked the entire time and I couldn’t tell half of what she said, she talked fast and gave a lot of info.  We finally got checked in at 6pm. We did some exploring around the hotel and about one block down from the hotel. I didn’t want to be too adventurous in eating on our first night here, so we ate in our hotel restaurant which was a buffet. I had plenty of choices, Dustin was a little more adventurous at the buffet, he ate a raw octopus. After we ate, we were so tried from the long flight that we just went back to our hotel room to relax. We did Skype my mom and David Ryan. It was heartbreaking seeing our son cause he told us to come get him, but he did ask for Sophie. He didn’t quite understand why we didn’t have her yet. We also skyped with Dustin’s mom. Then, we went to bed because we were so exhausted

The night before we dropped David Ryan off at my mom’s. He did well because my sister, niece, and nephew were in town and he was so excited to see them. I had a hard time leaving, my goodbyes took a while. I didn’t cry in front of him but I did shed a few tears on the way home. But, I am so glad my sister was in town, it made it so easy for him. Later, that night my sister sent me a text saying they were all giggling in bed. That made me feel better about leaving him.

A miracle that we got our tickets!

This past Tuesday, June 24, we received our confirmed travel dates and were told that we needed to buy our international airline tickets now. Well, we didn't know that and had some money on reserve, but not enough. There were only four tickets left for the dates we needed and they were about 5,000 dollars. We called around other airlines, like Delta was wanting about $7,000 (who can afford that). So, we were going to try get the airline with the $5.000 (airline tickets for the 3 of us) tickets. They told us if we could pay some on them now that they could hold them until Thursday and we could pay the rest until then. But, we don't get paid until Friday. They said they couldn't hold them that long and plus the price could go up on Friday IF the tickets were still available (remember only 4 tickets left). We still needed half the difference. We prayed for a miracle. And come Thursday, a miracle came. We both got paid on Thursday instead of Friday. We have never received our paychecks a day early, but this month we did! So, now we have our travel dates and our plane tickets, so it is finally happening. We are finally getting our baby girl after 16 months! Our travelling agency in China is taking care of all the travel "in China," so that is one less stressful thing we have to worry about. Soon, they will send us our iterinary and invoice (hopefully, we can get another miracle on that one too, since they will probably want their money instantly also) for the travel within China. I do know that we will get to tour the Great Wall of China, get Sophie on July 22 (Gotcha Day!), and have a lot of free time in Guangzhou while we wait on her Visa. With that said, I do have some prayer requests; pray for travel safety, Sophie's acceptance of her new family, Sophie's  foster mother (who has had her since this past September), Sophie's parents (I know it must of have been hard for them to give up their child), David Ryan and the rest of the family's safety and health while we are gone (I will be half around the world without my son and I will be at better ease if he was well and safe while we are gone), Sophie's transition to her new home, David Ryan's acceptance of his new sister, and the 14 hour plane ride (especially on the way back with a two year old).

We did send a photo album to Sophie with pictures of us, but I know it is still going to be hard for a two year old to understand what is going on. I do expect it to be hard at first. But, I pray that she will soon learn that she can trust us and accept us. I do want her to grieve, it is only natural that this happens. But, I also want her to know that we love her and she doesn't have to be afraid. So again, please pray that Sophie transitions well.

The next blog post will be with us in China! I am going to try to post everyday, but I don't know how the internet connections will be there and how Sophie will act everyday. Until then, I have a lot to do before we leave. See you in China!

Travel Approved!

Today started off with us taking our son to a muesum. Mainly, I wanted to keep busy because today we could receive our travel approval from China which it would make it two weeks since we received our Article 5. However, they told us it could take up to 3 weeks, so I didn't want to get my hopes up today. Then, we came home and had lunch. I went grocery shopping. Called my sister talked to her for a while. Then, I decided to practice packing for our China trip which they suggest doing. I am glad I did this, because I have some rearranging to do or we need an extra suitcase. Also, over the past week I have been cleaning the house from top to bottom because I know I won't be able to do this once Sophie comes home. Anyway, I had about given up on getting our travel approval when sat down for supper tonight. Then, my phone's email alert sounded and I looked at my email. It was from our adoption agency! It was  an email telling us that they have received our travel approval from China and that in a few days they will be sending our confirmed traveling dates to us. But, we should be traveling in about a month. We were praying that we would travel before school starts (another answered prayer)!

We have our travel approval, Sophie's room is ready, and her family is ready for her arrival including her big brother who says Sophie will be his best friend. Also, the other day just out of the blue, he said "I am just ready for Sophie to come here." So, I am hoping David Ryan will be a great big brother!

We are still short the travel expenses to bring Sophie home. We have a website that takes donations securly, which is  https://www.youcaring.com/adoption-fundraiser/help-bring-home-sophie-wei/63317.
Please feel free to share this link!

Hopefully, soon you will be following our journey in China. I plan to update this blog daily when we are in China getting Sophie! Please continue to pray for us!

Somewhere out there is a little girl who doesn't know us, but will soon have a forever family who loves her so much!

One Step Closer....

We received our Article 5 (a letter from the U.S to China giving us the "okay" to adopt Sophie) today! That means we are one more step closer to Sophie. We are waiting on the travel approval from China and our actual travel to China. They said from getting the Article 5 to travelling to China is usually a six week time span. I was praying that we would get Sophie this summer before we had to go back to school and it looks like it just may happen!!! So, we would basically get the whole summer to spend with our son (while he is still the only child) and then the last two weeks of our summer break, we will travel to China! We have been waiting for this for a very long time and now it is almost here. Our son is understanding more and more. I hope Sophie is being prepared in meeting us. A few months ago, we sent her a photo album of us, the extended family, and our house. I hope her foster family has been showing her this photo album.

Also, I received a great Mother's Day's gift. Not only did my son make me some wonderful gifts from school, but I received an email from our adoption agency with an update on Sophie just two days before Mother's Day. In this update, we received updated measurements and things that she likes. Also, we received new pictures!!! Feel free to scroll down to see our beautiful daughter.

Yes, we are closer in travelling to China, but we still have a long way to get there financially. So, this coming Tuesday, June 11 from 5 pm to 9pm, we are having a fundraiser at Lost Pizza Co. in Southaven to help us raise the travel expenses. Also, at our church, Gracewood Baptist, we are having a basketball tournament on  Saturday, June 22. If anyone would like to participate, let us know or Gracewood Baptist. Gracewood is located in Southaven on Getwell Road south of Stateline and north of Goodman. We also have a website set up that takes donations securely. This website is https://www.youcaring.com/adoption-fundraiser/help-bring-home-sophie-wei/63317.

Continue to pray for us; pray for safe travels, pray that Sophie grieves naturally, but learns quickly to accept us as her new family!
